J S Morbius:
I remember that hot, dry Indian summer day, powerful northeast winds howled, plummeting humidity below ten percent. The land surrounding us had suffered three long years of parching drought. Although my neighbor, Jim, the hunky, volunteer firemen, and I had cleared the vegetation, still surviving, within one hundred yards of our houses, there was nothing that could have prevented that wildfire from destroying our lonely nests. Detecting the scent of smoke, I opened the door, seeing flames jump ten times higher than the tallest height of conifer trees bordering my safety zone, racing towards me like a raging inferno. You always think this could never happen to you, but I grabbed documents, my hard drive, and cell phone, fleeing below the floor into the self-sufficient vault two stories underground.
Two days later, I emerged, surprised. My rustic house still stood, untouched by fire. Wandering outside amidst the charred ruins of vegetation and life, I found Jim, naked, except his open fireproof coat, extinguishing the last hot spot, embers of the remaining destruction.
“Finally, I found you.” He panted. “You’re safe. I saved your house over mine. I’m not waiting for you to decide on love anymore. I’ve lusted you forever.”
