J S Morbius:
Chopping firewood most of the morning in preparation for winter, Shane stripped from his clothes to bathe in the cold, rippling river water, his sweaty body reeking. He had left the city for the Smith River, retiring early to escape his meaningless job and greedy, deceitful friends, he endured for too many years. He lived alone, earning money from wood carvings and ceramics.
Stepping out of the river, he stopped, his eyes catching a glimpse of a young, naked man, sitting farther down, near the willow trees. He hadn’t seen anyone in months. Shane scouted the surroundings, expecting someone else nearby, but there was no one. He waded downstream secretly, his curiosity in control.
Surprised this man didn’t hear the sounds of his feet splashing the water and crackling small branches, Shane cleared his throat twenty feet away, not wanting to startle him. “Are you lost?”
The man turned his head around, his eyes expressing a familiar, lonely sorrow.
Shane recognized love’s heartache.
“I don’t know where I am. You probably think I’m crazy. A friend left me here without anything.”
Shane sat behind him, wrapping his arms around his waist and held him. “I’m alone too. I’ll help you.”
