The warm, sparkling sunlight melted the chilling wisps of the October’s dense, morning fog. Arriving in the late morning at Cambria Shores, Glenn Talbot and Billie Blake resolved to find peace and relaxation on their honeymoon. They pulled into the motel driveway off Moonstone Drive, viewing the ocean’s shimmering blends of emerald green and turquoise. The grounds of Cambria Shores had changed. In front of Moonstone Drive, the slope painted a colorful scene of blooming succulents, cacti, perennials, set in terraces of lawn, rock and gravel.
The Pagan Knights including their dog, Bradley, a miniature American Eskimo Husky, had returned to this vacation sight for their honeymoon, after they were married in the summer in the rotunda of San Francisco City Hall in front of Harvey Milk’s bust. They had high expectations for a good time and had money to spend from their wedding reception gifts. They had stayed at Cambria Shores twice before with Bradley, since it was a motel catering to people with well-behaved dogs. Bradley’s behavior was questionable. He was spoiled, usually having his own way, annoying and embarrassing his masters.
Having lost weight for the reception, they were thin and trim. Billie, forty-three, was two years older than Glenn. Billie’s sun bleached hair receded above the deep trenches of wrinkles on his suntanned forehead. He stood five foot nine with an athletic build, his eyes varying from green to blue, depending on his emotional temperament, which, usually, led to trouble.
